The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran presents his credential letters to the President of the Republic

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Portugal, Morteza Damanpak Jami, on Friday, July 19, 2019, presented his credential letters to the President of the Republic, His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, during a solemn ceremony at the Belém National Palace in Lisbon.

Following the ceremony and during a meeting with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Excellency the President of the Republic emphasized the need to pay more attention to the cultural sphere vis-à-vis the relations between the two countries, taking into account the longevity of the historical and cultural relationship between Iran and Portugal, and announcing his country's willingness to enhance relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, in all possible fields.

Referring to a technical problem in issuing visas to Iranian citizens at the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in Tehran, especially to students, His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa pointed out that the Government would try to solve the problem as soon as possible, and in the meantime, another European embassy would issue visas on behalf of Portugal.

The President of the Republic emphasized the importance of multilateralism in the current international system and underscored the preservation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) as an important example of multilateralism. Deploring the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from this agreement, the President of the Republic expressed the interest of Europe and of his own nation in preserving the agreement and meeting Iran's legitimate demands within the JCPoA, showing optimism about the resolution of existing problems and the need to leave open the door for negotiations, in order to resolve differences.

During this meeting Ambassador Damanpak Jami, while conveying the warm greetings from the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the President of the Portuguese Republic, renewed President Rouhani’s invitation to the President of the Republic to visit Iran, adding that the five-century old diplomatic relationship between Iran and Portugal is an important foundation for the current relations between the two countries and that the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of culture, is welcomed.

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran thanked the Portuguese Government for the temporary resolution of the issuance of visas through the Embassy of Spain in Tehran and expressed his wish that the Embassy of Portugal in Tehran will soon resume its work issuing visas to Iranian citizens by sorting out the technical problems at its Consular Section.

Pointing out the current conditions for the parties to implement the nuclear agreement, Damanpak Jami stressed that the agreement (JCPoA) is the result of two essential elements in existing international relations: Negotiations and Diplomacy.

Taking into account Iran's full compliance with the JCPoA, confirmed in fifteen consecutive reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ambassador Damanpak Jami added that the recent measures taken by Iran to reduce its commitments are in line with preserving the agreement and stressed that Europe, aside from fulfilling its own obligations under the agreement to provide Iran with meaningful economic benefits under the nuclear accord, rather than pressuring Iran to fully abide by its commitments, should instead, urge the United States, who by violating the multilateral agreement which was formally endorsed by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, has imposed cruel sanctions, in order to obstruct trade relations between Iran and other countries, especially Europe.

Ambassador Damanpak Jami emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks to maintain peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region more than other nation and believes that tension and conflict is not in the interest of any regional country.
